I see I'm late to the party. Yes, that's a prickly pear cactus, and those are the fruits. They make very good jam, but if you're ever lost in a desert and there are prickly pear cactus with fruits like those, they can keep you alive while help comes. Full of water and tasty, too.
Those are the fruits and they make a tasty jam or can be roasted. Beautiful!
